What is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)?
An ITIN is a tax processing number issued through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS issues ITINs to those who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have a Social Security number (SSN).
What is an ITIN used for?
ITINs allow the IRS to process tax returns and payments for individuals who aren’t eligible for Social Security numbers.
If I apply for an ITIN, does the IRS alert Immigration Services?
No. The IRS isn’t allowed to share this data with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. An ITIN is for tax functions only, and your privacy is a priority.
Who is eligible for an ITIN?
Anyone who is not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN) but is required to file their income tax return must apply for an ITIN.
